The Return of Yeon Sang-ho's K-Zombie: Jun Ji-hyun's 'Colony' Dominates the Box Office

Surpasses 2 Million Viewers in 5 Days, the Fastest Pace This Year... The Overwhelming Spectacle of "Swarm Intelligence" Zombies That Captivated Cannes

Director Yeon Sang-ho's latest film, 'Colony,' is fiercely taking over theaters. Released on the 21st, 'Colony' surpassed 2 million cumulative viewers by the alternative holiday on the 25th, securing the absolute top spot at the box office. Achieving this milestone on just its fifth day of release, it easily outpaces the 2026 mega-hit 'The Man Who Lives with the King,' which took 12 days to reach the same mark. This cements 'Colony' as the fastest-grossing film of the year.

'Colony' is an intense thriller that depicts the desperate struggle of isolated survivors trapped inside a barricaded mega-shopping mall amidst an unknown infection outbreak, facing off against infected beings that evolve in unpredictable forms. As Yeon Sang-ho's third zombie installment following 'Train to Busan' and 'Peninsula,' the film's box office success is heavily driven by a robust cast. The lineup is led by Jun Ji-hyun as biotechnologist Kwon Se-jeong, alongside powerhouse actors like Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-been, and Kim Shin-rok.

The international response has been equally explosive. Invited to the Midnight Screening section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival ahead of its official release, 'Colony' received an enthusiastic standing ovation from global filmmakers. Foreign media and critics have praised the film for expanding the K-Zombie universe to an entirely new level. In particular, the introduction of zombies possessing "swarm intelligence" — communicating efficiently like ants or fungi and sharing intelligence as if they were a single organism — delivers a fresh brand of horror unseen in conventional genre films.

Furthermore, the bizarre yet breathtakingly spectacular acrobatic zombie choreography, performed by over 20 top-tier Korean modern dancers, thoroughly captivated international audiences with its dynamic physical expression. As 'Colony' relentlessly sprints toward the 10-million-viewer mark, the global entertainment industry is keenly watching to see if it will write a new box office legend for Korean cinema.
